Legrand announces that it will begin testing NPS technology in its RF-enabled switches.

NEW YORK, NY, November 10, 2016 —In a move to bring greater intelligence and connectivity to the Built Environment, Legrand today announced it will be testing Network Presence Sensing (NPS) technology with Legrand switches. NPS technology monitors RF signal strength between switches, lights, and other IoT Devices and detects the interference created when people or animals are present in the wireless network. Such technology can grow over the product life cycle through over-the-air updates since NPS uses the wireless communications already built into Legrand RF devices. The resulting analytics can determine presence, motion, direction and speed, and when deployed with other IoT devices in the home could provide safer, more efficient, more intelligent homes and workplaces.

Today’s announcement was made by Legrand North and Central America Chief Executive Officer John Selldorff at the North American launch of Legrand’s ELIOT program to advance IoT in the Built Environment. According to Selldorff the ability to deliver NPS functionality within Legrand switches in the near future could be transformative.

“The potential for an NPS-enabled Legrand switch is diverse and compelling,” Selldorff explained. “Such a device could automate pathway lighting and help prevent trips and falls; enable people counters in the event of an emergency; trigger fall detection to assist the elderly and precisely locate and monitor intruders in a break-in. That’s just some of the safety and security advantages. Now imagine the efficiency, productivity, sustainability and recreational gains of more responsive, intelligent buildings with an NPS-enabled Legrand device.”
